If you’ve ever had the opportunity to visit Milan’s Salone del Mobile (Milan Design Week), you know that it’s a global design fair comprised of the world’s most well-known A&D brands. You may not realize, however, that it’s so much more than that.

Every year, Milan Design Week’s center of gravity also includes Salone Satellite, a visionary hub dedicated to designers under 35, showcasing contemporary explorations, putting their design ingenuity on full display. This initiative has always been an important part of the fair and this year, Salon Satellite celebrated its 25th anniversary.

Marva Griffin Wilshire, who is still its curator, has believed in the potential of young designers since 1968 and has supported over 14,000 talented creators to go from prototype to household names.

Here is our selection of the top 5 brands to watch from Salone Satellite this year.

ELISA PASSINO’S PASTEL PALETTE TAKES MANY SHAPES

From tiles to rugs to wall coverings, Elisa Passino's geometrically inspired creations and pastel palette shapeshift to bring lines and circles to spaces. This year, Elisa presents "Ellenica", her first capsule collection of three-dimensional ceramic pieces together with new carpet designs.

SOO JOO STUDIO IS SO 'NATURE'

Soo Joo Studio transforms the sweeping lines of Korean calligraphy into sculptural objects that capture the essence of nature. Today, design must satisfy our biophilia, the human need to feel connected to nature. Soo Joo develops biophilic design methods, by using momentum and tension (the same force present in the DNA helix) to create hand-carved timeless pieces.

BLAU CO’S DECONSTRUCTED CERAMICS ARE STACKABLE

When we first entered BLAU CO’s booth at Salone, we were confronted with sand and broken pieces. Upon further inspection, we discovered beautiful vases, that we realized were staclable bases, that connect to create totems and standing art pieces. We dove in to discover how they could be deconstructed, playing with each piece and making our own structures.

ROOSA'S FURNITURE IS FUN(K)TIONAL

Designer Roosa Ryhänen's collection arises from the idea "form follows intuition", exploring how intuition can reveal itself in machine-made objects. We found that her pieces brought a youthful energy to every day functional furniture. Who knew hanging things and sitting down could be so colorful.

CAYENNA'S COLLECTION IS BLOOMING

Andreína Raventos is translating the idea of the art of living...through pureness. Cayenas is a collection of sculptural lamps that can be placed in multiple positions. The organic volume projects a beautiful shape of light and recreates a soft atmosphere. The collection is inspired by the Cayenas, flowers present in her childhood and are made through the process of 3D printing.
