We chatted with architect and hotel lobby competition winner Roxana Beltrán about what inspired her winning board.
I am based in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico. I acquired my professional title as an architect from the National Technology of Mexico, Los Mochis campus. From there, I began in various architecture offices, where my affinity for interior design and landscaping led to an exploration of the world of design. My growth has been gradual, learning more everyday about the fundamental importance that design has in our lives and I apply this to each project I undertake.
A hotel lobby is the initial calling card for guests. It should be a harmonious blend of art, decoration and spatial distribution. Additionally, incorporating design touches inspired by local and cultural environments adds an enriching and distinctive dimension. These elements not only serve as visual adornments, but also encapsulate the authentic essence of the place, giving the lobby an identity rooted in its context, providing visitors with a unique and unforgettable experience.
When designing my hotel lobby, my main objective was to create an experience that makes people feel welcomed, comfortable and enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance. Incorporating visually appealing art and décor that serve as a focal point and generates interest, along with the use of distinctive architectural elements to create a unique identity for the space. I also added furniture and textiles that are comfortable and welcoming, promoting the feeling of home away from home.
My hotel lobby mood board is a testament to the timeless elegance of the jade stone, the refreshing allure of tropical vegetation and the captivating beauty of an art deco jungle. The design draws visitors into a world where luxury meets nature and where the opulence of art deco fuses with the wild beauty of the jungle. This creates a unique, immersive experience.
I found the fusion of art deco with the exuberance of the jungle created a unique combination of elegance and sophistication. I like how it includes the use of geometric lines, elegant shapes, luxurious materials and vibrant colors. Natural motifs, such as tropical leaves, exotic animals and organic patterns bring it to life. I liked the visually striking and attractive environment, which conveys a feeling of luxury and at the same time, can be connected to the vitality of nature.
My journey began with extensive research of existing hotel lobbies that embodied my style and captivated me. This was followed by a meticulous selection of colors and textures through creative experimentation on Mattoboard. This process allowed me to visualize and refine the design, resulting in a stunning and unique hotel lobby that is both luxurious and inviting.
For new projects, I immerse myself in my environment, drawing inspiration from nature, the beach and colors that evoke vitality. This personal connection with my environment provides me with a constant source of fresh ideas. Additionally, I find inspiration in the work of artists, architects and interior designers whom I deeply admire, which adds an element of innovation and perspective to my designs. I also explore various artistic styles and trends through platforms like Instagram and Pinterest.
Mattoboard has revolutionized my design process, offering a platform to visualize and refine my ideas. Its versatility and extensive digital library allow me to experiment with different materials, textures and colors, making it an invaluable tool in my creative arsenal.
One of the qualities that I value most is its ease of use, providing a fluid and accessible experience. Also, the extensive variety of materials available significantly expands my options and allows me to bring my architectural concepts to life through experimentation.

The combination of ease of use and creative possibilities make this tool an indispensable ally in my architectural practice.
